This tool was developed based on the voices of the Hauraki whānau at Te Whāriki Manawāhine O Hauraki who asked for resources to be designed to support their cyclic journey of healing and recovering from the pain of mahi tukino. It was an incredibly generous and collaborative process with the Hauraki whānau and Good Health Design that resulted in the creation of a physical toolkit to be used in community.

The Thematic Pantry is an interactive and engaging teaching tool designed to simplify and gamify the process of understanding Thematic Analysis. It was created in collaboration with the expert knowledge of Thematic Analysis practitioner Gareth Terry, designer Imogen Zino and the Good Health Design team at AUT.

When designing for the body one must consider how the body also interacts with the material placed on it. Second skin is a project that examined the two way interaction that occurs when we place things on the body. Pictured here is a hand dipped in clay (2 hours later). It explores how the body responds to clay and how clay responds to the body. The shards of clay that later fell away were then fired and exhibited. Imprints of lines from skin etched into their inner surface.

Mindset is a toolkit designed by Guy Collier & Imogen Zino for Good Health Design that creates a physical space for people to identify and reflect on their personal values. Built on the Japanese concept of ikigai as one’s “reason for being”, Mindset distills the overwhelming questions presented by the ikigai into an activity that focuses on a person’s present priorities and interests.

This latex flooring encourages tactile interaction. It was designed as an alternative to wall hanging art for people to experience through their feet. The flooring is filled with soft responsive material, moves and then bounces back with each step.

A focus of my thesis has been to create interactions with objects that are multi-sensory in order to encourage meaningful interactions with material objects that help us to enjoy the every-day. This bangle not only moves but creates a subtle yet satisfying sound. Reminiscent of the chatter ring from the mid 1990’s these bangles are a playful dynamic piece of jewellery enjoyed most by those who tend to fidget.

These earrings are hand carved and based on rock formations.

The second pair of earrings were hand carved and cast in bronze. They were a commission for wedding and were inspired by the magnolia flowers that grow so prolifically in springtime around Auckland.

A collaborative project with Benny Butcher, spatial designer and former boat builder. We were asked to create a modular item of furniture using a CNC router with as little waste as possible from a 1220 x 2440 mm sheet of material.

As you can see from the sheet pictured below, we were able to make two full sets of shelves from one sheet and supports with very little material left over.

This ring was 3D printed and then cast. I was exploring the notion of narrative represented through objects. The goal was to design an object that could tell a story, the front face is a large gold faceted diamond and behind in the photograph you see here are all the supports holding up this hollow shell.

A manufacturing challenge to design different ways of fastening earrings without a butterfly. This iteration was created using waterjet cutting and die cutting methods.

This first ring was a material experiment, in an attempt to be materially deceptive, I manipulated the silver to make it appear fabric like.

I find organic shapes mesmerising and enjoy working with texture and irregularity

Rings can become extensions of our bodies. No two rings are the same.

This ball was cast in sterling silver. It was originally made from stiffened twine, a plaster mould was made and then it was cast. It was nearly impossible to tidy up.

The ‘Exposure’ hood was made primarily out of an old, broken chandelier. It is an interactive garment that illuminates the performers face when they make a sound.

The second project was a collaboration with Interactive Designer Hannah Faesenkloet. This tongue and cheek project ‘Peekaboob’ is a bra designed to stare back at anyone who gazes upon it.

This project involved an exploration of haptic interactions with everyday objects. This series looks at how we can enjoy the unexpected and form attachment to every-day objects based on their tactility and irregularity. This project is an ongoing evolving body of work.

Design collaborations with Zoe McBride & Imogen Zino.

Zoe and I were particularly interested in creating an outdoor installation for adults and children to enjoy with an element of surprise. Using retro-reflective material meant that the public could go “bird spotting” and when they shone a light and found a shape it would glow back at them. The tree also plays native birdsong from inside, the recordings were kindly supplied by Ngā Taonga.
